A Heartfelt Message from
Andrea Brooks

I’ve decided to team up with the Elements Society because I believe it is important to empower youth to think critically about the future of our planet and our society. With your help, we can inspire the next generation to take meaningful steps towards a more sustainable, and healthy planet for all.

This community needs our help now

Your donation will help support the students and their families in Fort McMurray, Alberta. We’ve been working with this community since 2014 to help students develop action projects that contribute positively to their community. Donations are needed to help students and teachers, who continue to experience the effects of trauma, restore hope and resilience while they rebuild their community.

Why Fort McMurray

Three years ago, on May 1, 2016, a wildfire that began in northern Alberta tore through the city. The community experienced trauma associated with the largest wildfire evacuation Canada has ever seen, as more than 88,000 people forced out of their schools and homes, 1.5 million acres burned for three months and destroyed 2,579 homes.

The effects of the fire continue to challenge the community and their sense of comfort, safety and security. So far, only about 37 per cent of the destroyed homes have been rebuilt and people live with high unemployment and uncertainty.

A research study shows that mental illness and depression are affecting Fort McMurray students at levels well above other communities of Alberta.

These findings highlight the need to implement short and long term mental health intervention programs specifically aimed at adolescents, in order to help mitigate the negative effects of disasters on their mental health. Our charity delivers such a program.
